The excess of refined carbohydrates has had other effects on our population that are less obvious than obesity.  It has had a damaging effect on our health in general.

A diet high in refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta, flour, grits, rice, chocolate, candy and starches, like potatoes, causes or aggravates conditions such as: high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and high cholesterol.  Diabetics who fail in controlling their consumption of refined carbohydrates never succeed in controlling their diabetes.  In addition, it has been proven that there is a direct relation between the excess use of refined carbohydrates and cancer.

People that consume refined carbohydrates in excess force their bodies to create a surplus of glucose in their blood, along with high levels of insulin.  Insulin is the hormone that lowers the levels of glucose in your blood and is also the hormone that allows your cells to use glucose as energy.

When you consume an excess of refined carbohydrates your body converts these excess carbohydrates into glucose.  An excess of glucose is exactly what doctors refer to as “diabetes”.  In other words, the excess of glucose puts you on your way to developing or worsening diabetes.

National statistics of childhood and adult diabetes has risen each year for the past 30 years.  Every day, childhood obesity is becoming more and more common.  It is the excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates that is causing these health problems.

The excess glucose that refined carbohydrates produce forces the body to increase its production of the hormone insulin.  This excess insulin then interferes with the thyroid hormone and the person starts to have problems with their thyroid.  Problems like depression, irritability, insomnia, weakness, infections and a slow metabolism, among other things.  In conclusion, you create a hormonal chaos when you abuse refined carbohydrates.

There is an additional factor that has to do with inflammatory sicknesses in your body.  People who consume an excess of refined carbohydrates have more inflammatory conditions in their bodies.  In other words, it aggravates inflammatory conditions like migraines, arthritis pain, back pain, heart inflammation, kidney damage and a fatty liver.  The diet that has had the best results in lowering inflammatory conditions in the body has been a diet of proteins that are easily digested, like fish, as well as a diet of vegetables and fruits.  Vegetables especially have anti-inflammatory effects because they contain substances called “polyphenols ” that actually block inflammation.

Foods that cause the most inflammation are sugar and refined carbohydrates like doughnuts, cakes, breads and cookies.

On the other hand, because refined carbohydrates have an addictive and calming effect, many people consume them like “drugs” as a refuge during their moments of emotional crisis.  Stuffing yourself with doughnuts, ice cream, chocolate or cookies makes your body produce more serotonin, which is a calming and “feel good” substance that is produced in the brain.  Antidepressant medications like Paxil®, Prozac® and various others work specifically in the brain to increase and reuse serotonin and that produces a calming effect. 

The problem is that refined carbohydrates begin affecting our emotional state and create an addictive dependence because of the calming effect that they produce in our bodies.  People that are addicted to refined carbohydrates are addicted to food just as drug addicts are addicted to drugs.  They have to have their daily “fix” of Coca-Cola®, chocolate, candy or some other type of refined carbohydrate.  Their emotional health is affected.

It is true; the excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates is making our population sick.  Because of the fact that it is damaging our health it is a more serious problem than even the sad reality that each day there are more overweight and obese people in our society.
