The Power of your Metabolism
The MetabolismBAD DIGESTION
Something noticeable in people that are overweight or obese is that many times they suffer from one or several of the following digestive problems: heartburn, acid reflux, intestinal gases, flatulence or constipation. In general, these are digestive problems that medications can’t completely eliminate.
Another one of the factors that lowers the metabolism is bad digestion. This happens because the foods that we eat can’t be used by the cells in our body, unless the digestive process reduces them to the smallest molecular size to guarantee absorption. So, our cells can’t use a piece of meat because meat is a protein whose molecule is too big to fit inside a space as small as a cell. What nourishes our body and increases our metabolism isn’t what we eat, it is what our body is able to absorb through digestion.
The foods that we eat are composed of tiny molecules and atoms. Unless these foods can be converted into their smallest molecular sizes, they will not be able to be used by the cells. It is a problem of size.
Food starts digesting from the moment our saliva comes into contact with it. Later on in the stomach, the body uses enzymes and very powerful acids that, when they work properly, succeed in breaking even the toughest foods, such as pork rinds, for example. The digestion later continues throughout the intestines, where the environment turns from acid to alkaline (opposite of acid) and this completes digesting everything that wasn’t digested before. Finally, in the last part of the small intestine, nutrients are extracted from the foods already softened and broken down molecularly by the digestive system. The process takes between 12 to 16 hours to complete. When a person suffers from constipation it could take up to 36 hours or more.
One of the most effective ways to increase your metabolism and lose weight is by improving your digestion. There are various aids that work. They are things like:
- Drink a lot of water. Water improves digestion because it eliminates excessive acidity and creates the most effective means of transportation that there is for nutrients, the blood. Many cases of heartburn are simply cases of severe dehydration where the body finds itself impeded from making the alkaline substances that counteract stomach acids because of the water shortage.
- Take digestive enzymes. When a person is already experiencing bad digestion (heartburn, acid reflux, gas), the use of digestive enzyme capsules or tablets with each meal can be a real help in increasing their metabolism. Enzymes help the body digest food completely and then increase the absorption of nutrients which raise the metabolism. There are digestive enzymes for digesting proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Generally the different types of digestive enzymes come combined in capsules or tablets and you can get them in any natural food store.
- Lower your intake of refined carbohydrates like bread, flour, pasta, rice and sugar. These refined carbohydrates cause an excess of acidity because all of them, when used in excess, turn into a surplus of glucose (blood sugar). When excess glucose accumulates inside of your body it ferments and turns into acids like lactic acid, which increases the acidity in your body and reduces absorption. Many people that suffer from digestive problems see their problems disappear very quickly by reducing the refined carbohydrates in their diet.
- Don’t combine foods that don’t go well together like for example, fruit and cheese. Vegetables generally go well with meats, eggs and cheese but fruits ferment when they are combined with proteins like meat, cheese or eggs. Everything that ferments during digestion will produce gases. Furthermore, our body can’t use foods that ferment during digestion and thus they tend to lower the metabolism as opposed to increasing it.
When food creates gases inside our body it is only because there is something fermenting or decomposing. A healthy digestion doesn’t produce gases or bad odors.
In my experience I have seen that simply reducing refined carbohydrates and increasing the consumption of water can do miracles. People that do it stop using antacid medications and start enjoying good digestion and are given a more agile metabolism that helps them lose weight or maintain their figure.
At times, we tend to think that the solutions to our problems should be complex when, really, we have the remedies right under our noses. If a person suffers from heartburn, ulcers, acid reflux or other digestive problems it will be nearly impossible to lose weight. The solution could be as simple as avoiding soft drinks (examples: Coca Cola®, Pepsi-Cola®, 7-Up®) that are acids, increasing the consumption of water and reducing refined carbohydrates. In a short time the person will experience a marked improvement.
In principle everything that makes digestion difficult will also have the effect of reducing our metabolism and everything that makes digestion more efficient will speed up our metabolism. Bad digestion will produce bad absorption of nutrients. Bad absorption takes the body to a very low state of cellular energy. This low energy state contributes to what is called a “slow metabolism”. In order to lose weight and speed up your metabolism it is essential that you improve your digestive process.
