The Power of your Metabolism
The MetabolismTHE FOOD INTOLERANCES
Just about everyone knows what an allergy is. Allergies are closely connected to itching, mucus, sneezing, headaches and asthma attacks, along with various other effects. In some cases allergic reactions can be rather dangerous. Like when someone who has a seafood allergy eats something that contains seafood and it causes such a serious allergic reaction that the person must be taken to the hospital.
An allergy is your immune system reacting because for one reason or another it has identified a food or substance (dye, preservative, chemical, protein, etc.) as an “enemy”, and it attacks it as such. Allergies are noticed because they cause: swelling, itching, headaches, mucus, etc.
To fully understand the subject of the metabolism we must also touch on the subject of the food intolerances which are different than a regular allergic reaction. Food intolerances are less obvious reactions that the body has to those foods that it doesn’t tolerate but that have the effect of also reducing the metabolism. These reactions don’t produce strong allergic reactions, like allergies do, because they don’t involve the body’s immune system. Yet they can stop you from losing weight if you are not aware of their existence. They are reactions to foods that the body rejects. It has been seen that when we consume one of these foods that our body dislikes, the metabolism is lowered and it makes it difficult or impossible for us to lose weight.
The food intolerances of the body are more difficult to detect than allergies since they don’t provoke a visible allergic reaction. However, if your body ends up being intolerant to any food and you consume it, you will notice how your metabolism becomes stagnant and that won’t allow you to lose weight.
In my search for the reasons behind the slow metabolism I discovered that food intolerances really do exist. When we eat any food that our body doesn’t like, the metabolism slows down and it makes it impossible for us to lose weight.
In working with thousands of people that wanted to lose weight I have found that the foods that cause the most “intolerances” are corn, soybean and wheat. When your body is “intolerant” to one or several of them and you ingest them, your metabolism becomes stagnant and your body will not get rid of the fat.
Corn is the main source of the sweetener used by the industries that manufacture soft drinks. The sweetener product is called “high fructose corn syrup” or HFCS. For example, Coca-Cola®, as well as pretty much every other soft drink, is sweetened with corn syrup. Corn syrup is found in many prepared foods because it is a very economical sweetener and that’s why manufacturers prefer it. There are some people that simply cannot lose weight if they consume any product derived from corn because they happen to have an intolerance to corn or corn derived products. It has taken me a lot of work to figure this out. Working with thousands of people that wanted to lose weight, I saw that this was the case.
One time I was helping a member of the Natural Slim system lose weight and I ran into a clear case of intolerance to corn and its derived products. If I hadn’t realized that something was stopping the metabolism of this person, he would have failed in his attempt to lose weight.
In researching the causes of a slow metabolism, I have many times had to take the position of a detective. The experience has showed me that when a person is successfully losing weight and then suddenly stops losing weight and becomes stagnant, it is because some factor that affects their metabolism has changed. When I see that something that was working well suddenly stops working, time has trained me to ask, “what changed?” I don’t believe in luck, I believe in skill or ability.
In this member’s case, he had a situation in which he had been losing 2 to 3 pounds continually each week. This man had already lost more than 40 pounds and was trying to lose the last 20 pounds of fat. It was satisfying to see him every week because he always told us how good he felt and the truth was that every week he looked better physically than he had the week before.
However, after several weeks that he had been losing weight, he suddenly stopped dropping pounds. We tried waiting until the next visit the week after and still he hadn’t lost weight. He had become stagnant! Something was stopping him from losing weight. Something was blocking his metabolism. Logic told to me that someone that had been having so much success for so many weeks in losing weight didn’t just stop losing weight from pure chance.
In the second week that he hadn’t lost weight I sat down to talk to the guy to see what had changed. At first he didn’t find anything that had changed in his weight loss routine or in his diet plan. I kept persisting until the moment he told me, “Well, last week I bought some sugar free chocolates that are low in carbohydrates”. It came to my mind that Natural Slim™ sells special sugar free chocolates that are low in carbohydrates for people who want to lose weight. However, the chocolates that this man bought were sweetened with a sweetener called maltitol, which though it doesn’t contain carbohydrates, is a product derived from corn.
I suspected that perhaps this man had an intolerance to corn because I had read several books, written by doctors who are allergists, that talked about people whose body rejects corn as a food. I asked him if he had noticed that after ingesting these foods he had had intestinal gases or flatulence. He told me that he had indeed. I remembered that when any food is rejected by the body, you don’t digest it and it decomposes inside of the body, creating gases.
I asked this Natural Slim™ member to do his usual routine and diet as he had learned from us but to make sure not to consume anything that could contain maltitolor corn. It was a miracle, the next week this man was jumping with joy because he had lost 7 pounds in that week!
In this man’s case we discovered that his body was intolerant to corn and products derived from corn like maltitol. Since he stopped eating the chocolates and he made sure he avoided corn, the man kept on losing weight and he finally achieved his goal of losing 60 pounds from when he started.
With soy and its derived products the same thing happens. For some people, if they consume soy, they simply will not lose weight. When we first started Natural Slim, we used a soy protein shake. We found that some people lost weight very well while others lost weight slowly or didn’t lose weight at all. We started to become suspicious of soy and its “goitrogens” and we began to use whey protein (a milk protein) instead in our protein shakes. When we had the people who didn’t lose weight with the soy protein shake drink the whey protein shake, they all began to lose weight. That is how we started getting rid of all of the products that we initially offered that had soy and its derivatives.
Lastly, perhaps the most common intolerance that we have seen is the food intolerance to wheat. Wheat has a protein called “gluten” to which many people are intolerant. Wheat is the source of bread, flour and pasta. For some people eating a little bread is equivalent to not being able to lose weight. They love bread but their bodies don’t like the bread or any foods manufactured with wheat. I am one of those cases. In my case, if I want to lose weight, I have to completely eliminate wheat from my diet. I can eat small portions of rice, potatoes and other starches. But, if I eat a bit of bread or some breaded meat, my metabolism stops and I stop losing the body fat.
In my case, I discovered that wheat is the main food intolerance that my body has. I have seen hundreds of people with the same problem. I started buying rice crackers and potato bread in the health food stores in order to be able to enjoy toast or crackers every once in a while without having to ingest wheat. There are numerous products in the supermarket or health food store that are “gluten-free” because there are many people that are allergic or intolerant to wheat and its protein, gluten.
I should mention that some people also have intolerances to pork meat. Pork, for some reason, isn’t right for some people’s bodies and it makes it very difficult for them to lose weight when they eat pork, sausage or pork rinds.
Food intolerances have to do with hereditary factors. Some of our ancestors came from Europe, others from northern countries, others from Africa, while others came from the Orient. We all carry different genes that determine which foods are acceptable and those which are not acceptable for our bodies. Food intolerances are like allergic reactions but without obvious symptoms. They are reactions to certain foods that don’t belong in our genetic heredity. In other words, they are the foods that didn’t exist in the areas where our ancestors developed.
Aside from the difficulty in losing weight and the slow metabolism that corn, soy and wheat can cause, there are several warning signs that can be noted when we eat any food that our body doesn’t agree with. In many cases, when we eat a food for which our body has intolerance, it creates: mucus, stomach gases, intestinal gases, water retention or constipation. Sometimes you can also feel a certain tiredness or weakness after consuming one of your offending foods.
Don’t try to eliminate corn, soy or wheat from your diet. Try to DISCOVER which ones your body rejects and avoid them. I discovered that my only intolerance is to wheat. Since then I found that I can lose weight whenever I want. I just lower my intake of refined carbohydrates and eliminate wheat. My wife is intolerant to corn; she has to avoid corn in order to lose weight. Some people are intolerant to all.
The key is to start watching and paying attention. When someone eats a food that they are intolerant to it always causes certain side effects. They are subtle but noticeable body reactions, like stomach gases, intestinal gases, flatulence, mucus, as well as swelling. Swelling is caused when the body confronts a food that it considers an “enemy”, the cells fill up with water and they get bigger, which causes the swelling. Swelling is water retention. After having eaten an offending food you can see how suddenly your clothes fit tighter, it takes more work to get your rings off of your fingers and your feet barely fit into your shoes. It is water retention that is caused as a reaction to the food you ate and that your body rejects.
Food intolerances don’t apply to everyone. There are people that don’t have any intolerance. What is important is that you know that they exist. The idea is that you can detect your body’s food intolerances in your body before some food lowers your metabolism and makes you fail due to not knowing that this type of situation exists.
An additional way of finding out if your body has some sort of intolerance is by watching the cravings that you have. Oddly enough, those foods that our bodies crave the most are generally the same ones that we are intolerant to. If your body is asking for cookies, this is very likely proof that you have a food intolerance to the wheat in the cookies. The foods to which our body has an intolerance to, is generally the same ones that our body have such strong cravings for. This is also the case with sugar. Lots of people are intolerant to sugar and yet they crave it in full force.
Do the test and devote yourself to eliminating, one by one, the different foods that your body craves. If you eliminate one of the possible offending foods from your diet and during that same week you happen to lose double the usual weight that you had normally lost you will have found one of your body’s intolerances. Every one of the food intolerances is like a brake for your metabolism. If you remove the food intolerances you will remove the brakes that were causing a slow metabolism. Knowledge is power!
