LOSE WEIGHT OR SLIM DOWN?

Throughout the years nothing has been as arduous as convincing all of the people who seek out help at Natural Slim that what they really want to do is “slim down”.  The public mind is dominated by the wrong idea of “losing weight”.

I have spent many long hours convincing people that the important thing is not to “lose weight”; the important thing is to slim down, which means “reducing your body fat”.  There is a difference!

The human body is composed of many things: flesh, bones, nerves, muscles, water, fat, minerals, etc. The general public that is seeking help has this obsession with “losing weight”.  People torment themselves with their goals of “losing weight”.  However, the problem with us, as a population, isn’t that we weigh a lot.  The problem with us is that we are fat.  Our bodies are way too full of fat.

The difference here is that what we really want to do is reduce our body FAT.  We don’t want to reduce the water, bones or muscles of the body, just the FAT.  In other words, we want to “slim down”.

I myself use “lose weight” and “slim down” interchangeably throughout this book.  I have gotten used to “losing weight” because it is what everyone else has in their mind. However, what we really need to do is SLIM DOWN.

Many of the people following this wrong goal of “losing weight” have done permanent damage to their bodies.  For example, not too long ago I met a 17 year old young woman that had a deformed body with her skin hanging and falling off of her abdomen, arms and even her face.  This young woman, who was only 17 years old, looked like she was at least 25.  She had aged prematurely.  The young woman in question had experienced severe depression due to her obesity and her decision had been to “lose weight”.  In fact, she lost 80 pounds, but did it with an inhumane diet in which she only ate cabbage soup three times a day for ten months.  She lost 80 pounds but in the process caused so much starvation to her body that a significant amount of her muscles were destroyed.  Since muscles are what hold the skin in place, destroying her muscles caused all of her skin to sag and it deformed her young body.  The damage is permanent.

What you want to do is “slim down”.  We don’t want to destroy the muscles in our body because our muscles are what hold our skin in place like tension cables.  If we starve our bodies, our muscles will be destroyed and our skin will start to sag.  If the skin sags, then only plastic surgery can help us and we will never achieve what was possible if we had done things right in the first place.

If you decide to slim down you must forget about your weight.  Weight will be lost but what is IMPORTANT is that you lower your FAT.  When the fat is reduced you will notice the change in your clothing size and if you are a man you will notice it in your waistline.  This is what is important, lowering your clothing size! If your clothing size or your waistline is becoming smaller, that tells you that you are doing it right; you are reducing your body’s FAT.

The majority of people have a serious misunderstanding about fat.  Fat is not a heavy substance.  In fact, fat is the lightest thing in your body!  What really weigh a lot are water, muscles and bones.

If you look closely you will be able to notice, when at the beach or in the swimming pool, that people who have more fat in their bodies float much easier, while skinny people can’t float much at all.  Fat is so light that it floats.  The problem is that fat is a VOLUMINOUS substance.  In other words, it is a substance that occupies a lot of space.  But, fat has never been a heavy substance.

FAT FLOATS BECAUSE IT IS LIGHT

Flaco que no puede flotar
SKINNY PEOPLE DON’T FLOAT VERY EASILY

For example, when people work out, their muscular mass increases and thus so does their weight.  The people working out will have increased their muscle mass while reducing body fat; therefore, they will weigh more because of the added muscles and at the same time be more slender.

A while ago I was talking with a Natural Slim client that had went from a size 22 to a size 8 using our services.  She was very happy.  She was telling me about her current exercise routine along with what techniques she was using to increase her metabolism that she had learned from us.  She told me that she had once been on another “weight loss” plan where they didn’t allow exercise.  She told me that they didn’t allow exercise because “exercise increases your weight”.  I was almost in a state of shock hearing this.  How could someone possibly recommend to another person who wants to boost his or her metabolism and become slender that they not work out because it would make them gain weight? I realized that the misunderstanding between “losing weight” and “slimming down” didn’t only exist with public consumers.  Many health professionals have had the same confusion and that’s why they make recommendations like “don’t exercise so that you don’t gain weight”.

So then, what you want to do is boost your metabolism and SLIM DOWN.  Forget about your damn weight! What good will it do for you to “lose weight” if your clothes still fitted you more and more tightly?  What you really want to watch is your clothing size or your waistline.  You want your fat to go away and not have your skin hang off of you like rags.  To avoid this it is vital that you protect your muscles and your hydration. You want to slim down.

Stop worrying about your body’s weight and concentrate on decreasing your clothing size or waistline.  Put away your scale so that you don’t get anxious by weighing yourself all the time.  If you cause a stressful situation by Gorda pesandose lista para suicidarsetrying to “lose weight” you won’t be able to slim down because you will have caused a large production of the stress hormone, cortisol.  Cortisol is a hormone that makes you gain weight and doesn’t allow you to slim down.  Don’t try to slim down by stressing yourself out or pushing yourself to extremes to “lose weight” because you will already have sabotaged your efforts.

If someone notices that you are slimming down and asks you the usual — “how much weight have you lost?” — tell them that your problem never was being “heavy”.  Your problem was being a little bit “fat” and therefore you are only interested in reducing the fat in your body; that’s why you don’t make it a custom to weigh yourself.  If you want, tell them what clothing size you’ve went down to or how many inches you’ve lost off your waistline.  In the process you will teach the person a lesson about “slimming down” as opposed to “losing weight”.

Also take note that you shouldn’t have unrealistic expectations.  If you suffer from various health conditions you will always have a more difficult time slimming down than if you were in perfect health.  Say you have high blood pressure, asthma, diabetes, hypothyroidism or another condition; that reflects that your body is not in an optimum state.  A healthy body slims down easily.  An unhealthy body slims down slowly.

As for expectations, you should also be aware that a younger body has more potential to recover the metabolism and slim down.  The contrary is also true.  For example, at my age, 57, I have to put forth much more effort.  I have to be much more disciplined in my lifestyle than a young man who is only 25 years old would have to be.

Women always slim down slower than men.  Don’t think about getting into a competition to slim down with your husband.  The reason is that men have much more muscle (about 40% more) than women.  Since muscle is what burns fat, men always slim down faster than women.

The important thing to remember is what we want: to increase our metabolism and “slim down”.
