THE TRUTH ABOUT CHOLESTEROL

After having read up to this point, it is possible that you are thinking that there is something wrong with all of this because I’m not asking you to cut back on fats and cholesterol.  Instead, I’m telling you to eat butter, which has cholesterol, and to stop eating margarine, which has no cholesterol.  These can sound like pretty weird ideas.  However, you can understand the topic of cholesterol to the point where you won’t ever have to worry about it again.  Typically those things that cause us the most problems are those that we don’t totally understand.

I am aware of the fact that for more than 20 years the media has bombarded us with the dangers of cholesterol. The truth is that many times the media is more concerned with a type of sensationalistic reporting that sells them newspapers or increases their TV ratings, as opposed to actually informing the public of the facts. This is why the media isn’t necessarily a good source of information about health topics; the information isn’t always completely true.  More often than not, pharmaceutical companies are hidden behind the news about our health. The pharmaceutical companies benefit from causing us enough fear to react by going to the doctor so that he or she can give us a prescription for their medications.

You surely have the ability to understand this subject of cholesterol and stop worrying about something that you can control on your own without any major problems or medications.

Cholesterol is a natural substance that your body produces and it is essential to your health and life.  All of your body cells, except the cells in your bones, contain cholesterol.  We could say that cholesterol is a base material from which your body cells are constructed.  Without cholesterol, cells couldn’t be built.

This substance called “cholesterol” seems more like a type of wax than a fat.  It is a substance that our body also uses to build our sexual hormones.  For example, if you are a woman this is due to the fact that your body produces a lot of estrogen and only a little bit of testosterone.  If you are a man, the opposite is true for you.  Men have a lot of testosterone (masculine hormone) and little estrogen (female hormone).  Your body makes these hormones by using cholesterol as a base material.  Without cholesterol there wouldn’t be sexual differences between us.  Cholesterol is that important.

Years back, when the nation-wide campaign to "educate us" about cholesterol had just begun; we were told that all cholesterol was "bad". Then some years later it was discovered that there are 2 basic types of cholesterol:   “bad” cholesterol and “good” cholesterol.  The one called “bad” cholesterol is LDL (“Low Density Lipoprotein”).  This “bad” cholesterol, LDL, is a “low density” cholesterol, in other words, it is soft and gummy.  Since it is soft it is also sticky and it decomposes very easily.  Imagine that the consistency of this “bad” cholesterol is like chewing gum. The problem is that it sticks to your arteries and decomposes, creating other toxic substances in your body.

On the other hand, there is the HDL cholesterol (“High Density Lipoprotein”) that they call the “good” cholesterol.  This other type of cholesterol is tough, it doesn’t decompose, and it doesn’t stick.  In fact, it is this “good” cholesterol, HDL, which gets rid of the “bad” cholesterol in your body, LDL.  You can think of the “good” cholesterol, HDL, as having the tough consistency of a bowling ball.

There are other types of cholesterol like VLDL (“Very Low Density Lipoprotein”), but for our purposes here it is enough to know about only these two types, LDL the “bad” and HDL the “good” cholesterols.

The pharmaceutical industry has turned medications that control cholesterol into a gold mine.  The statistics are clear; diagnoses of “high cholesterol” conditions are increasing each year that passes.  Every year there are more people with “high cholesterol” and more people taking medications to control it.  There are also many more cases of children and adolescents with high cholesterol.

All of this is happening while, each year that goes by, people consume less and less foods that contain cholesterol. In other words, in our days, supermarkets and food stores are full of products that are “cholesterol free”.  When a food is “cholesterol free”, they prominently advertise it on the label because the manufacturers know that the public has a fear of cholesterol and uses it to their benefit to increase their sales.  These “cholesterol free” products are also frequently advertised on T.V.

Butter is hardly eaten anymore in comparison with margarine.  This happened due to the fact that margarine is sold as a “cholesterol free” alternative, since real butter has cholesterol.

The same thing happened with eggs.  The consumption of eggs in the United States has gone down more than 40% in the last 30 years.  This is again due to the massive campaign against cholesterol.  From there were born new million-dollar industries and “cholesterol free” products like the egg substitute Egg Beaters®.  According to the advertisements, eggs contain cholesterol; therefore, we should either cut back on them, or stop eating them altogether.

All of this also brought about the production of polyunsaturated oils like corn, vegetable and sunflower oil that have caught on quickly due to being “cholesterol free”.

We have exchanged butter for margarine, pig fat, (which was used for frying) for corn oil and eggs for imitation eggs — all of this to switch to “cholesterol free” products.  However, each year there are more and more people with high cholesterol!  There are more people with clogged arteries from cholesterol and more young people having premature heart attacks.  So, we eat much less cholesterol than before, yet we have more cholesterol running through our blood.  This doesn’t make any sense! It’s like saying that the less money I deposit in my bank account, the more money I will have in it.  How can we have more cholesterol in our body if we are consuming less of it?

Well, there is an explanation.  We aren’t going crazy yet.  The reality is this:

OUR CHOLESTEROL GOES UP WHEN OUR CONSUMPTION OF REFINED CARBOHYDRATES GOES UP!

If you don’t eat refined carbohydrates excessively, it is IMPOSSIBLE that you will have high levels of “bad” cholesterol.  The only exception to this, is if you have a hypothyroid (low thyroid function) condition that hasn’t been detected.  A deficient thyroid always increases your cholesterol (see the topic on PROBLEMS WITH THE THYROID GLAND SYSTEM).

So, “high cholesterol” is equal to “excess of refined carbohydrates” or hypothyroidism.  They have recently been blaming the “hereditary factor”, but the reality is that it has never been scientifically proven.

The same reasons why our population is overweight and obese are the same reasons that cause the “high cholesterol” conditions.  If you don’t believe it, go to your doctor and take a cholesterol test.  Later, start a 2x1 or 3x1 diet and see how your cholesterol goes back down to normal in 30 to 60 days.  I’ve seen thousands of people who were overweight because they were addicted to carbohydrates.  As soon as they started controlling their intake of refined carbohydrates, they started slimming down and their cholesterol, in ALL of the cases, went back to “normal”.  This happened even when they were eating butter with cholesterol, eggs with cholesterol and meat with cholesterol.

The human body has a sophisticated mechanism of controlling its cholesterol levels.  When you eat meat which contains cholesterol, your body detects it and orders the liver to produce less cholesterol.  If you avoid cholesterol in all of your foods, your body tells the liver to produce more cholesterol to compensate for the cholesterol that you aren’t giving your body.  Cholesterol is essential for your body and if you don’t give it the cholesterol it needs, it will make it anyway. We can say that the body self-regulates itself unless it is forced to make more cholesterol because of excessive carbohydrate consumption or an undetected hypothyroid condition.

Now, we could say that cholesterol is a type of “building material”. It is like the cement that we use to build houses. Cholesterol is the “cement” that the body uses to build the walls of the cells. That’s why when you are getting fatter from eating an excess of refined carbohydrates and from a high production of insulin, your cholesterol is also going to go up. To be able to build new fat cells, your body needs a lot of new cholesterol. So, while you are getting fatter little by little, your cholesterol will continue increasing its availability in your body.

Everyone that does a diet that controls their intake of refined carbohydrates like the 2x1 or 3x1 diet© lowers their “bad” cholesterol, LDL, while increasing their “good” cholesterol, HDL.

Cholesterol is a “building material” not just for building new cells, but also to repair damaged cells.  So, your body uses it to cover up flaws or breaks in areas where there are damaged cells.  This is why people who have cancer have increased cholesterol levels.  Cancer causes extensive cellular destruction and your body produces much more cholesterol than usual in an attempt to “repair” the cells that the cancer has been destroying.

If you enjoy a having spare ribs for dinner, don’t worry about your cholesterol.  Just be careful not to have your spare ribs with another food that is high in carbohydrates like mashed potatoes, especially if you are already suffering from high cholesterol.  Refined carbohydrates are what raise your cholesterol.  Salads and vegetables are natural carbohydrates that lower your cholesterol.  In general, everything that increases the production of insulin in your body will raise your cholesterol levels.  If you control your refined carbohydrates, your production of insulin will go down, as well as your cholesterol.

It could be that your doctor has told you the exact opposite of what I am telling you (I’m not a doctor).  Your can see it for yourself; do a lab test after doing the 2x1 or 3x1 diet for awhile.  You’ll be surprised!

I have personally helped dozens of doctors that were overweight and had high cholesterol in bringing their cholesterol levels back down to normal.  That was easy.  The hard part was getting them away from the refined carbohydrates so that they could do it.

I can’t blame the doctor’s for their lack of knowledge of the causes of high cholesterol.  Believing that a person has high cholesterol because they eat an excess of foods that contain cholesterol sounds logical, but it is not correct.  In general, doctors study nutrition for less than 12 hours, and the scientific study of the metabolism certainly isn’t a subject in medical school. Add this to the massive propaganda that the doctors receive from pharmaceutical companies through their pharmaceutical sales representatives. You will see that the information that they receive has been put together so that they sell medications, not to get rid of the causes of high cholesterol.  These simple, yet effective ideas of lowering the excess of refined carbohydrates in your diet to eliminate the CAUSE of high cholesterol are never going to be popular amongst pharmaceutical companies, but they are indeed the truth.

What you should know about eggs is that they are a perfect protein.  Eggs don’t have “bad” cholesterol, LDL, which is the one that sticks to your arteries.  Eggs only contain “good” cholesterol, HDL.  Eating eggs everyday can only lower your “bad” cholesterol.  This information was the subject of the Times magazine cover page in July of 1999.  I started researching it, testing it with thousands of Natural Slim™ members, and found that it is definitely true.  Eating eggs everyday lowers your “bad” cholesterol.  Naturally, don’t go and eat your eggs with a big piece of bread or some pancakes because you’ll see that your “bad” cholesterol will go up.

Not too long ago, the University Of California School Of Medicine did a study in which they had 1,934 men and women eat up to 14 eggs a week.  Even though each egg had some 250 milligrams of cholesterol, the researchers were surprised when they didn’t find any significant increase of cholesterol amongst the participants of the study.  There have been other studies that have confirmed this.  Even so, the news media hasn’t released this information so that the public will stop avoiding eating eggs.  This type of “positive” news that doesn’t involve sensationalism, tragedy or danger simply isn’t of interest to the news.

When you start a 2x1 or 3x1 diet© you might notice that your cholesterol levels will go up a little.  Don’t worry; it is natural for your cholesterol to go up a little because in doing the diet you will start to slim down.  Slimming down breaks up a good amount of your fat cells and they release their cholesterol content into your blood. The cholesterol increase that you might notice in a lab test is also the same cholesterol that is leaving your body. Give it a little bit of time and you’ll see that it will keep going down with every lab test that you do.

Even though we are talking about cholesterol, it is important that you know that the most dangerous substance for your heart is not cholesterol, but triglycerides .  Almost all of the publicity has been given to cholesterol because there is a variety of medications to lower cholesterol and this has created a huge potential market.  However, what you should avoid is having high triglycerides because they are what are truly dangerous. High triglycerides mean that there is too much fat floating in your bloodstream.  There is more likely a relation between high triglycerides and heart problems than a relation between high cholesterol and heart problems.

Luckily, nothing brings your triglyceride levels back to normal faster than lowering your intake of refined carbohydrates.  A 2x1© or 3x1© diet will bring your triglycerides back to normal in no time.

Cholesterol should never be a problem for you if you understand what causes high cholesterol levels. Take control of what you eat and lower your consumption of refined carbohydrates. In doing so, you will have taken control of your cholesterol, as well as your triglycerides.

Polyunsaturated oils can be found mostly in grain products, corn, soybeans and fish oil. They have been dubbed the “healthy oils” but there is nothing “healthy” about them.

Triglycerides - Triglycerides are fats. All fats and oils are triglycerides.  They are called triglycerides because the molecules that make up all fats and oils always contain 3 (tri) extension lines made up of fatty acids hooked to a backbone of glycerin.
